Larger benthic foraminifera – faunal pioneers in mixed carbonate-siliciclastic systems
Burdigalian turbid water patch reef environment revealed by larger benthic foraminifera
Environmental reconstruction of a Langhian patch reef (East Kalimantan, Indonesia)
The development of isolated patch reefs within siliciclastic sediments epitomise the Miocene carbonate deposits of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. A team of Marie Curie Early Stage Researchers and Principal Investigators from the THROUGHFLOW project collaborated in reconstructing a mixed system, delta-front patch-reef. Based on a multi-taxon analysis of the fossil assemblages, we described the palaeoenvironment and biodiversity of this well-preserved Langhian patch reef.
Foraminifera assemblages of East Kalimantan through time and space
Larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) are useful tool for biostratigraphy, paleoenvironmental reconstruction and biozonation. They are excellent environmental indicators and with use of microfacies analysis, geochemical and statistical methods we can obtain diverse data, e.g. water depth, temperature, living surface. Main objective of this project is building a stratigraphic framework based on biostratigraphy of LBF which should result in chronostratigraphic information for sediments of East Kalimantan.
THROUGHFLOW: NTA-4 samples arrived!
We are happy to announce that our second shipment of samples from Indonesia have arrived safely! Yesterday morning our container filled with 93 crates was brought to NCB Naturalis. Crates were unloaded and divided according to different institutions and are now waiting for further shipment to their eager researchers!
TII – This Is Indonesia (copyright: Dedy)
For those of you thinking we are payed to go to Indonesia
and enjoy tropical beaches walking around occasionaly looking for fossils, I
will try to describe our working day. Place of action: Talisayan, little
village in the middle of the Mankalihat northern coast.
06:30 Wake up, using lovely common facilities (no toilet,
