THROUGHFLOW London - sample processing:

After the shipment arrived in London and we dispatched the relevant crates to our colleagues around Europe, work has started to process Nadia Santodomingo and Emanuela di Martino’s coral and bryozoa specimens. We started by creating a reference collection of corals sampled in Java and Kalimantan by Ken Johnson on previous Throughflow field trips.

There are around 750 coral specimens and each has been washed, boxed, labelled and registered into the NHM coral collection. They are now being identified by Nadia and will be used by her and others in the future as a taxonomic reference group from the Miocene of Indonesia. Nadia will also add to the collection from her own specimens over the next couple of years. With many thousands of specimens already collected, it promises to be a unique and comprehensive resource.
